|Advanced measurement systems and sensors are necessary for the continued maturation of gas turbine engines and are a common problem shared by propulsion engine and power generation companies. Better measurements of component behavior and performance throughout the engine is an ongoing challenge, and thus the Propulsion Instrumentation Working Group (PIWG) was established in 1995 to cooperatively address critical turbine engine-development test instrumentation and sensor issues required for future gas turbine engine development programs.
PIWG operates under a teaming agreement that was approved by all the domestic gas turbine engine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This teaming agreement allows the free flow of non-competitive information and thus better enables the OEM community, small businesses and government agencies to collectively work on funded sensor and measurement system activities.
PIWG’s organizational structure includes a Leadership team comprised of U.S. turbine engine companies and government agencies working in concert with a Strategic Advisory Board (SAB) made up of vendors and academic institutions. PIWG focuses on bringing together the best companies and government organizations to reach goals difficult to achieve by any single party. The Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) serves as the facilitator for PIWG and manages all funded PIWG projects. PIWG’s leadership team works cooperatively with OAI in planning and directing the ongoing organizational activity. Since its inception PIWG has identified measurement requirements, worked on funded sensor development contracts, supported small business innovative research (SBIR) activities, and advocated new test and evaluation (T&E) tools. The focus has been on reducing the cost of engine testing, improvements in sensors and measurement capability, and reducing the cycle time for product development.
